Pualei Farm Wins Agriculture Grant with USFCR’s Support-1

US Federal Contractor Registration (USFCR) is proud to announce its role in assisting Pualei Farm in securing a $30,000 grant from the Maui Department of Agriculture. The funding will enable Pualei Farm to transform its operations into a fully sustainable backyard farm powered by solar energy to benefit the Molokai community. This shift to renewable energy will also support the farm’s mission of providing free educational programs on backyard farming and sustainability practices to the local community.

Receiving this grant means we can teach others how to backyard farm and live sustainably,” said Donna Gamiao, founder of Pualei Farm. “It’s a step toward seeing shelves in our stores proudly display ‘Local Produce from Local Molokai Farmers.’

The grant will fund the installation of a solar energy system, significantly reducing Pualei Farm’s reliance on traditional power sources. This transition to renewable energy will also allow the farm to reinvest savings into free backyard farming classes designed to empower residents to grow their own food or pursue commercial farming opportunities.

Speaking on her experience with USFCR during the grant process, Donna states, “From beginning to end, it was pretty seamless. Great communication. Professional.” She also praised USFCR Strategic Development Specialist, Daniel Cavins, for his support. “Daniel was effective, thoughtful, and respected what I had to say in my application. He was personable and easy to work with,” she noted.

This grant highlights the critical role renewable energy can play in supporting local agriculture and community well-being. By combining solar technology with a focus on sustainable farming education, Pualei Farm is creating a model for agricultural resilience and environmental stewardship. The Molokai community stands to benefit greatly from this initiative, which promises to reduce dependency on imports and enhance food security on the island.
